Takedown Festival 2014: Interview: Chasing Cadence

We spoke to Jack from competition winners Chasing Cadence ahead of their slot on the Southampton Music Introducing stage at Takedown 2014...

The Punk Archive: Tell us about winning the competition to get here?
Jack: We weren't expecting that at all, but the support we received was absolutely incredible, with nearly 1500 likes. It's not usually our way of going about things, but literally someone messaged us saying that we should do it, so we did! It was given to a panel of judges and then we were lucky enough to be picked.

The Punk Archive: You had some tough competition, too...
Jack: Yeah, our friends in City of Ashes were close with the number of likes. I think they might have beaten us on likes, actually. There were some amazing bands there...

The Punk Archive: It must have felt really satisfying to have made it...
Jack: Oh, it's incredible. I was on my way home from work, and I didn't know until I got off the tube, and yeah it made my weekend!

The Punk Archive: It's not like you're opening the stage, either, you're opening for the headliner...!
Jack: Yeah! We've just been on tour for ten days, as well, so this is our last day. To end it on this... And playing alongside one of our biggest influences, Funeral For A Friend, is just mad....

The Punk Archive: So it's just going to be a massive party tonight, then...!
Jack: A massive party, yeah! I'm so glad the wristbands get you into the afterparty!

The Punk Archive: So how was the tour?
Jack: I think we went too hard too soon! We haven't toured since the summer last year so we quite hard the first couple of days, and by Wednesday, when we was in Nottingham, we were just so tired. We had a Barfly [Camden] show on Thursday, and it was just like "Oh God". So we all went back home on Thursday! It has been amazing though, we played with a band called The Effect, from Wales, and they're incredible, a really really cool band. It's been great. We love getting out and meeting new people, travelling around.

The Punk Archive: It must be pretty cool to be 'making it', you know, seeing yourselves on posters, on the line-up and stuff...
Jack: Yeah! We're under no illusions, though, we know we're a tiny grain of rice in a massive music industry. We'll just continue to have fun: that's the main thing for us! To play as prestigious a show as this is just incredible.

The Punk Archive: So what are your aspirations for the rest of the year?
Jack: We're about to release a new single actually, in April, which is taken off our EP. We're then due to do a few weekenders, possibly in Europe too, which will be fun. We'll spend a lot of time writing this year as well for a debut album, which we'll look to record either late this year or early next, with a release of probably next summer sometime.

The Punk Archive: Can you give us any insight into that...?
Jack: Yeah, it's literally really, really early. We've got one demo of a track. We've received a lot of feedback over the last year and a half on our newer stuff, and we've taken that on board. It's not a completely new sound, but as I'm sure every band say, it's a more mature sound, better songwriting and everything. I'm looking forward to it.

The Punk Archive: So what can people who haven't seen you before expect from your live show?
Jack: We love being energetic! People kinda see us as a mixture of pop-punk and hardcore; but our music's not necessarily pop-punk, we don't like to think that; but it's just our energy! It's the same with the hardcore: we're not really a hardcore band at all but it's just the energy we put in! It's not an act, it's a natural going-mental after a few beers! So yeah, lots of energy and we like to get involved with the crowd too!
