Takedown Festival 2014: Interview: I Divide

We caught up with Exeter’s I Divide ahead of their stonking set at Takedown 2014…

The Punk Archive: Can you introduce yourselves for us please?
Josh: Individually?

The Punk Archive: Yeah, unless you all do it at once in chorus… (Some wailing occurs)
Josh: Hey, I'm Josh and I play guitar in I Divide.
Henry: I'm Henry, and I play lead guitar in I Divide.
All: (laughing) Oooh!

The Punk Archive: (laughing) Oh alright, sorry!
Chris: I'm Chris, and I'm the bassist in I Divide

The Punk Archive: Is that lead bassist, or just bassist?
Chris: I'll go with lead bassist…

The Punk Archive: Are you looking forward to playing today?
Josh: Yeah, we can't wait!
Chris: Yeah, we played it last year, didn't we? We were on very early, the first band of the day I think. A bit later today, ten to seven, so it should be fun!
Josh: Yeah, really looking forward to it. We're playing a new song tonight as well. We've been playing the same set for ages, so we're quite excited. We played our first show back of the year in Bridgend last night…

The Punk Archive: How did that go?
Josh: Yeah, really good! Sell out show, playing with the guys in Yashin, yeah it was wicked!

The Punk Archive: So who are you guys looking forward to seeing today?
Henry: I've heard Heart in Hand are playing. To be fair I haven't really looked at the line-up!

The Punk Archive: (laughter) So you're so excited to be playing, but you don't know who's playing?!
Henry: (Pointing at schedule) I want to see those guys, there…
Josh: We normally don't have any time to catch anyone! We're usually like “oh, we want to see this band, and this band”, and then we don't end up seeing any of them, we just feel really disappointed!
Henry: Yeah, it always happens…(scanning the schedule) there you go! I Divide! There we are…

The Punk Archive: Who's that?!
Henry: We'll definitely be there for that…
Chris: We'll go and check out Funeral For A Friend…
Henry: Blitz Kids as well, we're on tour with them in April, 21st-30th I think. And The First, we did a tour with those guys…
Josh: And check out our boys from Exeter, IDIOM…

The Punk Archive: I just spoke to IDIOM, they mentioned you guys…
All: Aww, did they? Lovely boys…

The Punk Archive: It must be really good, the local scene, for getting your music out there?
Henry: Yeah, it is, it's helpful. I guess the more you do this, the more you go around the festival circuit, the more bands you meet and the more friends you make. Everyone just kinda plugs everyone! The longer you do it for, the more at home you get. We're constantly just bumping into people, it took us about an hour to get down here [to the press room].

The Punk Archive: So tell us about the video for Follow. It's not so much a video or a song…it's more of a film!
Henry: That's definitely what we went for. We wanted a bit of a storyline. We've always done videos with random little stories in, but we thought we'd go for a video with a full length story, so basically a mini-film…about the end of the world!

The Punk Archive: The production of it looks incredible…
Henry: We did well, I think, with what we had! There was a lot of thought and effort went into it: we did this brainstorm and kept expanding on it! Luckily we found a lot of good locations down where we live in the South West, and the final shot, where Tom is stood inside of a cliff, is down a big clay mine which is in a local little village. It was all these different spots around where we live and we pieced them all together…
Josh: We came up with ideas on the day, like the running scene with Tom, when we were just like “oh, we should try this”… he ended up just legging it!

The Punk Archive: And you've got a new single out soon….? Is there a video for that?
Henry: Yes, it's all done, all ready to go! It's for a new track called I'm Not Leaving and it should be online within the next couple of weeks. We shot it with the guys from Sitcom Soldiers who've done a lot of great videos before, so we were really excited to work with them. End product looks really wicked and we can't wait to get it out.

The Punk Archive: You must be stoked for the album release, too?
Josh: So excited.
Henry: It's been a long time.
Chris: Actually, last year when we played here, we were recording, weren't we…
Henry: It was a bit later than this, it was in May last year.

The Punk Archive: So what was the delay between the recording process and release?
Josh: It was just all prep. We were already doing a lot of festivals last year and knew we couldn't get the album out in amongst the festivals because we didn't have enough time for press and stuff. We didn't want to release it after that because we'd have nothing touring; so we thought we'd wait until this time this year, get some tours under our belt, having had all the festivals last year. It felt like the right time to release it, really.

The Punk Archive: Sounds a bit…sensible?
Henry: It wasn't our idea! If it was us we would have recorded it and been like “yeah let's put it online, now!!”

The Punk Archive: So for those who haven't seen you before, what can we expect from your live show?
Henry: Carnage! Chaos…

The Punk Archive: But sensible carnage…?
Henry: Yeah I can't remember her name but a girl blacked out last night during our set. We were like, “bloody hell, what's happened there?”
Chris: Blew her mind, we did!

The Punk Archive: Yeah, you were that good!
Henry: We just try to have a good time. We try to make people laugh. We are a serious band, but we like people to enjoy themselves at the end of the day, and we go there with the mindset that we're going to have a good time, and we want everybody else to have a good time with us.

The Punk Archive: Do you have any pre-gig rituals or anything like that?
Henry: Yeah, we do actually…

The Punk Archive: You all look really embarrassed!
Henry: …(laughing) We take off all our clothes…no!
Josh: We just have a massive fight, don't we…
Henry: (laughing) Yeah, we do psych eachother up, start screaming at eachother, pushing eachother…
Josh: No, we actually do!
Henry: We pretend we're playing Wembley…
