Interview: Man Overboard

Ahead of their upcoming UK and Europe headline tour, we caught up with pop-punk heroes Man Overboard...

The Punk Archive: Are you looking forward to coming back to the UK?
Man Overboard: Absolutely. This is our eighth or ninth time coming over. It's always special to headline so we are especially looking forward to that.

The Punk Archive: How are UK and home shows different?
Man Overboard: From behind the scenes there a lot of differences... We are using rented backline in the UK where as at home we have all our own stuff. The people who come out are generally the same however they're usually a little drunker in the UK given your lower drinking age....!

The Punk Archive: You've been on a 'Defend Pop-Punk' mission for a few years now. How would you say the scene is right now?
Man Overboard: We've never been on that mission: DPP is a t-shirt design we made which has snowballed into an intangible moment of kids who rally around pop-punk bands... it's the people who care about the bands who make it what it is and who make the scene so amazing... with that being said, I think the scene right now is awesome and there's a lot of great bands. We're glad to be a part of it but it's a group effort so
we couldn't take all the credit.

The Punk Archive: How has the reaction been to Heart Attack?
Man Overboard: Quite great to be honest. On The Heart Attack Tour in America, we played a pretty fair balance of old and new songs and I was surprised to see that kids knew more Heart Attack songs than say some of the Real Talk or Human Highlight Reel songs. There is always going to be purist who will say "ah the first EP or the first album are the best, the rest is shit" but they're also the kids who are probably going to be into dance music next year and not give a shit about any of the bands in our scene, which is all well and good, whatever floats your boat. But overall we were really happy with the feedback and the reaction the album has received. Thanks to anyone who has picked it up.

The Punk Archive: What's next for Man Overboard?
Man Overboard: We did a solid 15 or 16 months of touring leading up to and following Heart Attack with very little time off.... so with that we took this summer off to hang with our families and significant others and also make a little something something that I can't talk about yet. In the fall we will be headlining Europe and maybe doing a few other things but are mainly focusing on writing a new album so we can get back on the road in 2015!

Man Overboard begin their UK and Europe headline tour on the 1st November.
