Where: Dublin Castle, Camden
When: 16th April 2014
Last Sunday I was asked if I wanted to go see The Talks, a ska-punk band from Hull. I am ashamed to say I didn't know who they were so I was instantly online, hitting up their Facebook and listening to their music to find out what these guys had to offer. What I found was well-produced, bouncy awesomeness.
Fast forward to Wednesday 16th April and I'm at The Dublin Castle in Camden having a beer and a chat with Pat, The Talks' front man before they are due to go on stage. Pat is effortlessly cool, happy to answer my questions about tour life and the hospitality of Europe for musicians and is even sweet enough to apologise for talking about himself and ask me about my career.
Their favourite gigs so far have been Lady Luck in Canterbury, Citrus Club in Edinburgh and The Winchester Gate in Salisbury, all rammed wall to wall with jumping, moshing madness in a hot box of hard core fun times. They have plenty of dates left to get excited about too: the current tour ends on 2nd May but they have some festivals lined up and a stint over in France and Germany.
I'm being gifted with skankalicious, melodic, party candy for my ears. Head bopping commences within seconds.
You know a band plays regularly when everything is tight, energy seeps from the stage and infects the crowd and you can't wait to find out what they are going to drop next.
The Talks are serious performers.
For lovers of two-tone, dub, ska and punk The Talks tick every box. It's rare to be so impressed by every song in a set and to go away thinking; “next gig near me, I am there!”
The Talks drop their next single Don't Look Behind You on May 1st with a launch gig at The Piper in their home town, Hull. If you can get there, or to any of their upcoming dates, go. You won't be disappointed by any stretch of the imagination. They are coming up fast, and gathering speed. Get on the wagon now and tell people you were there from the start of something big.
Check out the links below for their tour dates, music and more. Feed your inner ska beast. It will thank you.
