Takedown Festival 2014: Interview: Saint[the]Sinner

Our first interview at Takedown 2014 was with Pash from Saint[the]Sinner. He told us how proud he was to be playing, and what influences the band...

The Punk Archive: Introduce yourself for us?
Pash: I'm Pash, I play guitar and do all the electronic-wizardry stuff for Saint[the]Sinner.

The Punk Archive: So are you excited to be playing Takedown today?
Pash: Ah mate, I'm honoured to be playing it. The line-up, Kids In Glass Houses, Funeral For A Friend, Heaven's Basement: it's all the bands I grew up listening to anyway. To be on the same line-up as them is ridiculous.

The Punk Archive: It must be cool! You've got a classical side going with the heavier vibe, haven't you? What kinda brought that on?
Pash: Watching and listening to too many Tim Burton movies really, you know, watching Edward Scissorhands, hearing the soundtrack and stuff like that got me into it. I just thought I wanted to try and incorporate it you know, because I am a bit weird…

The Punk Archive: How weird?
Pash: Pretty weird! We won't go into it, buuuut…

The Punk Archive: ...you're not drunk enough yet! The classical side of things is doing pretty well, though, with bands like Set It Off doing good and Elliott Minor reforming for a handful of gigs… do you take influences from them?
Pash: Yeah, there's a lot of US bands we're taking influences from at the moment, like Crown The Empire. We're also all massive Panic At The Disco fans, the kind of stuff that they write is really far out and they're not afraid to mess about with instruments. I think that's what really influences us musically.

The Punk Archive: So is that what you guys do, get in a room, jam, and see what comes out?
Pash: Well, the writing process normally is that during the week, I'll sit at home and jam out some stuff on guitar and synth to get some ideas down. The rest of the guys will come in at the weekend and we'll go through other ideas and whatnot, and then just sculpt a song out of it, really! It's a really inclusive process, everyone's included. It's difficult when you start a song because you don't really know what you want to achieve. You've got a ballpark sound you want to go for. Once it all starts coming together, though, it's worth it!

The Punk Archive: What influences your songwriting?
Pash: I mainly start off songwriting with the orchestral side of things. I'll come up with something that I'm really feeling then kinda add to it with the guitars. Jimmy, our lyricist, is just an amazing songwriter, and it's cool to bounce ideas off of him, as I've never really done that before.

The Punk Archive: What can we expect from your live show today?
Pash: I dunno really! A bit of madness! We're all a bit nuts out there, so as soon as we step out, it'll fire up a bit!

The Punk Archive: (Pointing at the bandage on Pash's arm) What have you done to your arm?
Pash: Ah, it's a long story. It involved a glass door, a fridge, and me wanting pizza a lot. I flung the fridge door open… my arm went through the glass… and… yeah! It was pretty nasty, I spent 8 hours in A&E. Least delightful experience of my life!

The Punk Archive: I can imagine! And right before Takedown, too, always the way…
Pash: Yeah I know man, I know. I've been resting it up all week, bandaging it up. If there's blood all over the stage I'm really sorry!

The Punk Archive: What are you up to for the rest of the year?
Pash: Something we're working on right now is putting together a full-length album. We've been talking to a few people and we've recorded demos at the moment. We're gonna be doing something really cool with that at the end of the year.

The Punk Archive: Can you give us any clues?
Pash: I can't really say anything, but it is super cool, man! I'm really stoked to do it!
