The press information states that "these three friends came together to start a band yet knew very little about their instruments." To be honest, that line sets you in perfect stead to listen to Cayetana for the first time. I had no expectations, because I remembered my own terrible attempts at making it in a band (that drum kit that sat in my room and was played twice, for example), and it made me listen a bit longer, and a bit harder.
The Philadelphia girls are a new-ish signing for label Tiny Engines, and released a 7-inch in February. Containing only two tracks, one of which is a remaster of a demo, it's a good introduction to the band, and a teaser for their full-length debut. The tracks boast a true DIY vibe, with the genre lines blurring from indie to punk, with a hint of a folk influence just for good measure. Vocals are reminiscent of the big 90’s DIY scene, with not-quite-right harmonies contrasting against the garage band sound.
Chances are if you like Waxahatchee, you'll like Cayetana; they've even just wrapped up a short US tour together. Hot Dad Calendar and Ella took a few listens to really grow on me, but there's an energy there that can't be faked: I'm imagining packed live shows with plenty of dancing. When the LP release date is announced, I'll be putting it in my diary, and I recommend you do the same. In the mean time, two tracks are better than no tracks.
