Tawny Peaks are a rock band from Montclaire, NJ in the USA and as much as I hate to say it, that's about as interesting as it gets.
Listening to their album was drier than… well…. watching paint dry actually. They appear to have influences from The Eels and such, but none of the heart. The vocals throughout are monotonous and laid back to the point of putting the listener into a catatonic state but with the added injury that the only hope of thinking whilst in said state is rendered non-existent by the fact that your brain will have run away in protest.
There is actually some relatively decent musicianship going on in the background: the finger-picking guitars are an added sweetness to the rhythm guitar's driving effect-grit and the simplistic drums and bass are a good foundation to the four-to-floor feel. I can't help but think that were there a change of front man and woman this band might create a lot more hype for themselves but as it stands there is nothing to set this apart from anything else. Three songs in and I find myself listening to 30 seconds (if that) of each track to see if anything surprises me. Sadly not.
Sorry Tawny Peaks. That's all I've got.
This is a shitty review. You can't make a professional opinion of an album if you don't listen to the whole thing.
ReplyDeleteHi Rene,
DeleteThanks for your feedback. I always ask our writers to give their true opinion of the record they're listening to, be that positive or negative. I would much rather my writers are honest about their thoughts and opinion, and as I say, sometimes this doesn't make for positive reading! Fundamentally reviews are subjective pieces of writing, and music is a very emotive area, which means that in some instances it is likely that negative reviews will be written.
Thanks

But how can you give a proper review to a 30 minute record when the "writer" admits to listening to 4 minutes and 50 seconds of the record at most.
